Brief BIO-DATA of Dr. Nagesh R. Iyer FNAE, FIE
Dr. Nagesh R. Iyer is currently the
Director of CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC), Chennai and the
Coordinating Director of CSIR Madras Complex. He is Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering. He
is also addditionally Director, Engineering Services Division
(ESD)/Engineering Coordination, CSIR and Acting Associate Director (Academic),
Academy of Scientific & Innovative Research (AcSIR).
He has had throughout brilliant academic career obtaining his Master of Engineering
& Doctor of Philosophy from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His performance in the R&D activities
and outstanding contributions enabled
him to get noticed at young age and rise quickly in CSIR-SERC; has over
35 years of experience in the computer-aided analysis and design of complex and
large structures which include infrastructural facilities such as power plant
structures, flyovers, bridges, natural draught RCC hyperboloid cooling towers,
offshore & ship structures, critical components of Aerospace Structures, …
The major field of research of Dr. Nagesh Iyer has been Computational Structural Mechanics and Performance Evaluation of
Structures with strong bias towards efficient Structural Design. His fundamental
contributions in adaptive finite element methods and performance evaluation
techniques have been outstanding and are well referred in the literature. Most
of his work is published in well rated International Journals and Conferences. He strived hard to ensure
his research is translated into usable software, tools through design
guidelines. He led a
powerful group from CSIR laboratories and academic institutions in development
of FINEART software which is considered as the best attempt in the development
of FEM software in this country. Dr. Nagesh Iyer is placed in the topmost layer of the scientists in
the field of Computational Mechanics.
Dr. Nagesh Iyer specializes in the area of Fatigue, Fracture Mechanics, Damage Mechanics, Damage
Tolerance and Methods of Life Extension of structural components and large
scale structures and performance evaluation & condition monitoring of
structures, Innovative sustainable and/or new engineered materials
and novel methodologies for retrofitting, Structure-Interaction studies; etc. Dr. Nagesh Iyer made critical
contributions to this emerging area of national importance. The
methods/procedures developed by him are valuable in evaluating newer large
constructions and aging structures. His contributions are recognized with Fellowship by INAE
and with Technology Prize by CSIR. Dr. Nagesh Iyer is such a committed scientific leader with an excellent human touch. The scientific community of SERC respects Dr. Nagesh Iyer who is the Head of the laboratory and
also leader on several projects. 'Dr. Nagesh Iyer has exceptional qualities to carry the scientists of SERC along with him in
achieving the objectives which CSIR is looking forward from such a premier
research and development laboratory. He has been handling several large size
projects of not only high cost but also of high impact value. He has the ability to lead scientific teams to successfully complete challenging projects. He has handled all the
additional responsibilities given by CSIR with discipline, dedication and commitment. He is member/Chairman of several national and
international committees.
+ The success
in developing FINEART software and successful completion of R&D projects stand testimony to this. The integrated
software Computer-aided Analysis & Design of Ship Structures (CODES-I)
developed in 1980s is a unique effort in developing software for the specific
requirements of the industry which has been hailed as one of the landmarks for
computer-aided design of ship structures in India and the re-engineering of
Navigational Span of Pamban Railway Bridge with
out-of-box solution in 2008 is only of its kind!
+ Has traveled extensively abroad to
leading institutions UC Berkeley, Stanford University, Cornell University, in
the USA, University of Wales, Swansea, UK;TU Delft, Netherlands as UN Fellow
and to Research Centre, Juelich, Germany, various
universities/industries in Germany; Crackow University, Poland, etc
+
Out of 250 publications to his
credit, he has published over 100 papers in National & International Journals;
number of these are cited; rest at the National & International Conferences, and
over 200 technical reports;
+
Is reviewer of papers of national
& international journals, has obtained four Copyrights for software
developed and filed 3 patents
+
Member/Fellow
of many Professional Bodies - Institution
of Engineers (India); Indian Association of Computational Mechanics; Indian
Association of Structural Engineers, Indian Association of Wind Engineering, Computer
